With two kids and two pets, the room that gets the most use and abuse in our house is the mudroom. Up until yesterday, this room had been a dumping ground for paint cans, spray paint, and excess building materials- add piles of shoes, coats, and toys to that mix and you have one insane lady constantly cleaning. To preserve what sanity I have left, I spent most of yesterday tidying things up in there. It's not perfect or even finished, but we're throwing a big party this weekend and I didn't want people tripping over building materials.
The pile of blankets and party supplies on the cabinet below are in preparation for the party. The big yellow tin holds dog and cat food.
EZ E and Kicky are constantly collecting feathers, so we decided to tape them to the wall. We had been storing the feathers in jars, but the kiddos kept taking them out to compare and inspect, so this makes more sense for now.
We still have to finish the drywall and tape and spackle, but it looks so much better than it did before (see these photos and below). I'm always surprised how long it takes to finish things when you're doing it all yourselves.
This is an old picture, but not much has changed on that part of the wall (the carboys of hard cider have been replaced with paint cans). The barn door actually came from our barn and hides the washer and dryer. Since the room isn't insulated, we had to build a heated closet to prevent the pipes from bursting. It worked out really well this winter and is a great temporary fix (eventually we'll move the washer/dryer upstairs).

This is what the room looked like before we bought the house. Excuse the fuzzy photos- I didn't think we'd actually buy this place (ha)! There was mold covering everything underneath that paneling. Blech!

I know what you mean about things taking longer than expected. We're currently trying to repair the plaster walls in one room of our house and it's taken weeks between finding the time, then sanding, then applying more plaster, etc, etc, etc. It's such a good feeling to get it finished though.
Sometimes....projects definitely can take longer than expected...but things are looking really good though :) We just made a mini mud room in our bedroom...let us know what you think! (how2home.wordpress.com/2012/08/14/how-to-mini-mud-room)
What a great unit, love your display on top of it plus that chair is amazing!
Wow - you guys amaze me what you do get done - love it Abbey - where did you find those cubby's?
Are those vintage cubbies? So cool...
The mudroom's looking awesome! I know what you mean about diy timelines--they can be so frustrating! We've been working on our little 1/2 bath for ages--it was supposed to be a weekend thing, but you know what a can of worms old houses can be....
